Though there was no service to attend, Dimitri still found solace sitting at the back of the church. He gazed up into the ornate windows, watching the sun cast colored patterns through the stained-glass windows. Dimitri was thankful the guardians who escorted him understood they could back off here and offer their charge just a bit of space and perhaps a few minutes to breathe without feeling many eyes boring holes into his back. It was getting to be a bit much, though Dimitri much preferred his own guard to being stuck in a jail cell.
But today he was both out in daylight and on holy ground. It was proof of the miracle Lissa had performed and it seemed Dimitri's new duty was to maintain his composure while participating in endless testing to prove he was once more a dhampir.
Of course he was. The magic was unheard of, but every aspect of Dimitri proved he was no longer Strigoi. If only his heart would stop aching with the pain of what he'd done. So many had died at his hands and while he thought in time he could move beyond that, the suffering he'd caused to those closest to him was beyond all possible forgiveness. For instance, everything that had happened with Rose. There was no avoiding the memories. They plagued his every waking thought and infected his sleep.
But right now, Dimitri sought peace. And so his hands gripped the smooth wood of the pew and he bowed his head, hoping to find his peace in the church, if he deserved any at all.
