I've just got to express what a bummer the Midwinter Gaming Convention was this year.
1. First off, no Changeling, on account of real life stuff. We had plenty of warning, but when the head storyteller couldn't make it to Milwaukee, no one else was able to pick up the slack bummer. But that's ok! I delighted in the chance to play in some other LARP for a change!
2. No one else made it, all for valid reasons. Even Shoe didn't make it, and she was apparently a volunteer.
3. One good thing: I bought an 8-bit Fluttershy for my bookshelf. That was pretty cool.
4. Game started VERY late - I chose to try out One World by Night's Mage game. Nothing anywhere near the professionalism of Darkness Remembered was present. But hey, I can dig a casual-style game.
5. The Steampunk LARP was apparently only a half-LARP (the other half tabletop), which sounds fine. But there's no guarantee of it running on Saturday, and I'm not going back on a mere chance. So much to Lex's probable disappointment, I didn't break in my priestly clerics at a LARP instead of reality.
6. Here's the big one: the game had literally zero plot, zero story, zero adventure. We all sat around in a circle and talked about established plot points. I called it quits around 8:00, which was after about an hour of "game", where I basically practiced my juggling.
Here's what it comes down to: the high point of my night was walking back to my car, where some semi-drunk 40-year-old women asked me if they could try on my Action Pants (after I explained what they were - they weren't quite cool enough to know the term on their own). We had a delightful little rapport about fire dancing and the smell of burnt hair before I made it to my space shuttle.
A part of me is bumming because of the massive waste of time here. Another part is bumming because I was looking forward to game for months now, and another opportunity has slipped by. At least I have my birthday of Dread to look forward to!
Another part of me, however, is bumming because Midwinter failed for me. I wanted continuity from last year. I wanted to catch up with the incredible Nocker lady who won my monocle as a prize. I wanted to say hello to the Troll ballerina from last year and tell her that I've stuck with my classes and even moved up a grade. I'm very sad at the idea that the chances of seeing her again have dropped to effectively zero. That's a problem with meeting wonderful people at once-a-year events - it's hard to keep them in your life.
So to sum up, today wasn't the highlight of my week. There's hope for February, and GenCon is lookin' pretty awesome down the line. So I can afford to suck and be responsible instead of nerdy. I'll spend this weekend with a couple of books and visit grandma. I can subvert reality next weekend instead.
