TM Prompt #334: Vote

May 12, 2010 13:29

I don't hold allegiance to a particular political party. While my late husband was a staunch Conservative, I myself prefer to re-evaluate the parties every year and cast my vote depending on how each deals with a few key subjects.

Equal rights are one such subject. For all races, genders, sexualities.

Reproductive choice and freedom. I am a Catholic (my parents certainly never practiced birth control considering how many siblings I have) and while I personally have a moral issue with abortion... I believe the option should be legal and safe. I think that attempts to limit reproductive freedom are a misogynist throwback, and that women deserve to be allowed to choose what to do with their own bodies, even if to some of us their choices seem questionable. And yes, I'm aware the Pope would be displeased, but it's not like the Vatican much likes women anyway.

The environment. I remember being a little girl and watching Davis Suzuki on The Nature of Things, and sometimes I think back to those early messages of conservation and I sigh. We are killing our planet, and I believe the government should be working towards slowing this process.

These are the topics I look at. These are the subjects that determine my vote. I prefer that over blind party loyalty.
