#37: Would you rather lead or follow? Why? What role do you see yourself playing out over your life, leader or follower?
If you asked her, Heather MacNeil Hudson would tell you she's been a follower her whole life.
That's bullshit.
The oldest of eight children, Heather practically helped her mother raise her siblings. Six of the eight children were boys, which meant she didn't spend a lot of time playing with dolls - young Heather MacNeil was athletic and not the sort to halt play because of a skinned knee. She developed a startling playground war whoop that she used to herd her brothers about, directing them, shouting orders. When they played pirates, Heather fought to be captain.
When she got older, Heather maintained a small apartment on her own, securing herself a job she enjoyed. A job she quit for love, a move others might consider impulsive.
If you asked her, Heather would tell you that her late husband, James 'Mac' Hudson, was the one who made all the decisions. She was a housewife. That was all.
That's also bullshit.
Heather was the one who pushed Mac to speak to the Canadian Government about his experimental suit, clearing his name of theft and securing him his position at the newly created Department H. It's not unfair to say that without Heather, there never would have been an Alpha Flight in the first place. It's certainly fact that when the Government pulled the plug on the Flight programs, it was Heather who reactivated the team.
Perhaps most telling, after the death of her husband, Heather did not choose to return to a civilian life. She did not go back to being a florist, or remarry and become a full-time housewife. She did not choose the safe route. Instead she chose to don the mantle of Guardian and step up to directing her friends in Alpha Flight. And although she will never think see it, she is in many ways better suited to the position than Mac was. Mac was a scientist first. But Heather MacNeil Hudson is a born leader.
