It had been a while.

Really, it was as good an excuse as any.

When he'd been wandering around the universe as a solo act he'd been able to do whatever he'd wanted. Yeah, there'd been the Ravagers but mostly it'd been him and his ship and complete freedom to bang whatever attractive aliens he'd laid his eyes - and hands - on.

He couldn't say that there weren't benefits to being part of a group. It felt good to know that there were people who had his back. People who gave a shit about him and didn't threaten to eat him. Yeah, that was pretty fucking nice.

But god, did it make it hard for him to get any action.

Turned out it was pretty hard to convince potential partners to hang around when Rocket came in with a new bomb or Gamora was polishing a blade or when Drax just... WAS. They tended to find

Post-movie fic where Rocket finds that, for now, he is the big guy in this partnership and he becomes super protective of tiny Groot. I don't mind if it's shippy or gen, just so long as it's aggressively cute.

Team, Collector - Something's Missing

As he rebuilds his Collection, the Collector keeps careful inventory of everything he salvages, so it's not long before he realizes something's missing from his shelves - the Aether.

He knows the Asgardians will hear about the mess and will probably come out to make sure the Aether is still accounted for - and he has no interest at all in fighting with Asgardians, mostly because he knew Sif or Volstagg could easily kick his ass.

So the Collector contacts the Guardians to track down yet another Infinity Stone before the Asgardians come calling.

Bonus: he doesn't really give two shits who now has the Aether, he's just covering his own ass

Bonus: Loki somehow got his hands on the Aether but Loki is supposed to be dead so nobody suspects him
