I visited the University of Washington (aka. U-Dub or the U) this weekend for the Bioengineering Interview weekend. It was a lot of fun of course and I met some cool people. I flew into Seattle on Thursday night with another guy from my lab. We headed over to a nearby pub to hang out with the other recruits and some grad students. They're all really nice, if a little weird. I met Ronnie, the hyper Bengali guy, who gave me the same spiel three times (he was drunk) and walked me back to the hotel (even though I wasn't ready to leave, but I felt bad declining his offer). I met Rob, the tall GT grad, and Anthony, who had HUGE shoulders. They thought I was "feisty." Um OK.
Interview day was just really mentally exhausting. The four interviews weren't really difficult and they were only 20 minutes each, but for some reason, it hurt my brain to think that much. They took us on a campus tour and then to dinner afterwards with professors. I sat next to Dr. Yager, who is the main reason I applied to UW. He is working on developing a "lab on a chip" with a grant from the Gates Foundation and he knows so much about the social/political scene of developing countries. I am in awe of this man.
Saturday was just some general info about the program and then lunch at the Seattle Science Foundation, which is an overly-expensive office with about fifty $600 chairs in the lecture room is probably unncessary. Although the chairs were way nice.
In the afternoon, we walked around Pike Place Market, Seattle Center (where we ran down these huge sloped walls to try to touch the metal dome in the
fountain without getting soaked, and then the Lenin Statue near a gelato place with Strawberry Jalapeno gelato (yum). Saturday night, we went out to a trendy lounge and then to a club with pretty good music. I wore flip-flips and a sweatshirt. Go me!
And I met an Indian girl that I might room with if we both end up at UW. But there's not a lot of Indians in Seattle, according to Ronnie. I have nothing against white people, but at the same time, I'm used to having a large Indian population around me. I did see some Indian guys at the lounge and the club, but not many.
