this is what i get for messing on facebook

so instead of reading a chapter on teaching business letter writing or whatever, i looked around on facebook. a friend from high school joined a group that said free shaquanda cotton. well, lately i've been looking at groups like that to see what's going on with their legal battles and what not. i looked at this one and this 15 year old girl was sentenced to seven years in prison (i'm assuming it's a jdc) until she's 21 for pushing a hall monitor, a 58 year old woman. the group is turning this issue into a black vs white problem. apparently the same judge has been more lenient on white kids. while i agree that the seven years may be a little steep, i don't think race is an issue here. the issue is, why is a 15 year old girl pushing a 58 year old woman? that's the issue. i know that there are race problems in america; i am well aware of that. but i feel like the fact that a 15 year old girl has the gall to push a 58 year old woman down is a huge deal. where are her parents? who is raising this child? where are the teachers? is anyone enforcing ANYTHING any more? stories like this totally discourage me in wanting to become a middle school teacher.
