Yes We Can...and we have to

I sit here in a elated sadness, wondering to myself, will there be an openly gay president in my lifetime? President elect Obama is the first person of color to break one of the biggest ceilings in the world. We have had two women get close to VP but not there in America. Hillary did her best (and I still love her so very much), I'm not sure when and how we'll get that close again.

But if gays aren't seen as equal citizens...they can't adopt in many states, they can only legally marry in two states now thanks to Prop 8 in California.....how the hell could we be President? If others don't take gay people seriously, its hard for gay people to do the same. It makes drug abuse and alcoholism and so many other self destructive behaviors so easy....not an excuse but a reality for the gay community I think.

So in my sadness about my own lack of rights as an Gay American (I think anyone that is oppressed can't just be an American), I am going to choose to look to President Obama's struggle and success and to his words of hope to say "Yes We Can".
