2007-02-21 Either it's me getting more hooked or it's latest tactic of cliff hanging...but damn, the scroll bar always seem too long lately.

...and those who like political AUs that are minor or in the backdrop might also like:
-
Full Metal Panic (anime/manga), it's a secret military/highschool...action/adventure/romance/comedy...that's set in a political AU where the Cold War didn't end, and a nuke that was set off in the Middle East in the early 90s triggered Gulf War 5. Korea is doing fine, but China has been divided into a Dictatorship North and Democratic South fractions, with Hong Kong divided up like post war Berlin. Hearing 'Melissa Mao', a Chinese-American, speak of HK, was scary, when she told Sousuke to picture a place that used to be all fun and culture, a heavily policed region, beaches where people used to walk, landminded. Approaching 1997 and immediately after, there were so many scary predictions of what will eventually happen to HK, I'm scared for it now, if China goes to war with Taiwan, or even Japan, HK will be caught in the middle. Over all, I really like FMA, there are some things that annoyed me, such as the choice of the name 'Mao'...and that a twin in the Second Raid had her hair done up in twin buns, the hairstyle of little girls and servants.
Unlike some other animes though, FMA seem to have made an effort for diversity onboard the international secret military submarine, and have done research on it too. Andrei Kalinin is Russian, he's a father figure for Sousuke. Peggy Goldberry, a member of Medical Corps of the support group, is of African descent.
Kurz Weber might seem like the Stereotypical Anime American, but he's actually German. Sagara Sousuke's nationality is a mystery, but he is a practicing Muslim, however loosely he follows the Quran, he's shown eating pork, but he doesn't drink at all and he's kinda modest.
Kaname Chidori, the female protagonist, is all sorts of awesome as her background is /different/ but fits together, she had a relatively happy family probably, until her mother die, records say she ran away once and got arrested. Kaname's father works for UN, and he along with her sister lives in New York. Kaname is a favourite of the sports team, the class president, and she has a bestfriend that is actually important to her, and people she just don't like. In other words, Kaname has a personality!
Most recently, I finally got my hands on the book that covers details and interviews of the first season, Full Metal Panic: The Anime Mission. Squee! (*still averse to ordering anything over the internet*) It says of those two..."He doesn't have an ounce of fat on his body and his face always looks pensive, but he's got nice features. His looks are okay, but you couldn't ask for a worse date." p5, there was the time, later, in Full Metal Panic: Fumofu(comedy season), where Sagara blew up the lockers because he noticed that someone has tempered with his, it turns out to be a love letter from some female student, and...the episode is crazy, Chidori got to make repeated use of her hitting fan. "Other students call her ;the hottest girl you'd never want to go out with'" p6. Also; "She was already high-strung, even before she met Sousuke. But now that she has to deal with his crazy military antics, her blood pressure is sky high! p6
