Here's a page with some pictures and a drive-by brief:
http://beautifulatrocities.com/archives/2005/02/gaddafis_amazon_1.html I object to certain sensationalism and what I believe to be highly illogical speculation.
The Basics
1. Gaddafi is the really weird dictator of Libya.
2. His Amazonian guards is formed of Libyan women.
3. All swears an oath dedicating their lives to them, and he insist that they remain virgins.
The Illogical Speculation: That Gaddafi demands sexual flavours of them.
I don't believe that is happening, not because he's Mr.Morality, I really have no clue, but because of practicality. Sex is intended to build intimacy, if he is sleeping with any of them, then those he's sleeping with might expect special treatment. If he's sleeping with a lot of them, and just using them, then there will be resentment, which would be counterproductive to his safety eh?
Remember the third season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Faith uses guys and let them uses her, I think she actually uses sex as a defensive mechanism of distancing, if guys use her than it's okay to dehuman them, she was the one who deflowered Xander and she had no problem almost choking him to death later on. The Mayor on the other had, supported her and shown her affection, while firmly rejecting her offers of sexual flavours, stating that he's a family man, and therefore setting himself up as the father figure she's been lacking.
Gaddafi, is brilliant for choosing a group that would be most loyal to him and in the ways he cultivate that loyalty. The status of women in Libya is not that great, and like a lot of countries in Africa,
not only is rape a danger but they get blamed for it too, so to a man who offers them a position where they will be strong together and away from that, they would be immensely grateful. He insists that they remain virgins, it could be a matter of morality, but it's also practicality, because if they get involved with someone, things get complicated, you never know if the person they are involved with would want to whack Gaddafi, and then there is the divided loyalty issue again. I'm definitely not saying he's a nice guy, but what Gaddafi does, there is a method to his madness in this one.
