I remember reading speculations years ago, that 2007 is probably the year that Mainland China will finally invade Taiwan, that was what I was thinking about on New Years Eve.
I hope that it will never happen now, I sure hope that the Mainland Chinese government have been keeping their eyes open as to the going ons of Iraq.
If Mainland China invades Taiwan, Taiwan will lose, just like that. Taiwan is absolutely no match against the military and organized might of the Mainland Chinese forces, their government will topple, their officials captured.
What then though? Observe, a population, a civilization, that have culture, a sense of nationality, such as the Iraqi, or the Vietnamese, will not be subdued as easily, as more primitive lands of the past. They will fight to the death. Had it been America that have had their government overthrown by a foreign force, I will expect no less from the Americans.
Added complication is, the reason China is doing all this posturing, is because Taiwan and Mainland China had been one country though. What happened was, during the civil war, the communist party forced back the then elected, if very corrupted government, all the way off mainland, but the sea aided the elected government of China in keeping Taiwan. Thus, an additional question might be asked, does Taiwan belong to Mainland China, or does Mainland China belong to Taiwan? There is also of course, resentment aside, the people of the two jurisdiction are related people, same blood. I don't know how much that means anymore, the written language is different now, but there should be enough similarities to make the occupying force uncomfortable enough, eventually.
