Rogue animal activists stole Mike Costello's dog ...and I haven't even read the bible in ages, but why does this bring to mind the story about the rich men with flocks of sheep who stole the only one a poor man has? It was most probably a bunch of too-comfortable middle-class and above punks who had the time to pull this, stealing the only creature a homeless man relies on. It was well cared for, it had the attention of its owner almost 24/7, it has vet care through a friend of Costello, and the idiots who complain that it's cruel for the man to keep the dog with him in the cold must have missed the part where Costello do have arrangements with friends to go indoors in the winter.
...and if they were humanitarians, why didn't they offer to take Costello into their homes? The problem with shelters for Costello that pets aren't allowed. He had the dog for 8 years, before he fell into hard times 6 years ago.
I swear, lately, I have the urge to hit stupid people. They've sent Costello taunting notes too, so this is definitely less for the care of the animal than it is for causing pain to the owner.
Part of me fear that it wasn't any lover of animals at all and that the dog is dead or worse. ...and of course, poor Costello. I wish that it'll end with the parents of the punks in question discovering the dog, turning it over, then turning those punks onto a trip to the great outdoors...not throw them onto the streets, but actual wilderness. I find it interesting that most ARA nuts are even more separated from nature than the regular folks. I find it funny in a sad way to hear them preach about how we are a blight upon the earth. I love the world, what we shape and what is natural and bigger than us, I can't imagine how wretched in spirits one would have to be to divorce ourselves from it by preaching and believing that we don't belong.
On the homeless with animal note again, I think, animal shelters should work with homeless shelters in finding someway for the homeless to keep the animal while being helped. Maybe a shelter that does allow pets, or an animal shelter willing to foster an animal until the owner is back on his/her feet. They should definitely do this for women who are victims of domestic violence as well...I know some places that does. When resources in women's shelters are already strained it may seem stupid to have time to care about their pets as well, but if enough women are going to be 'stupid' enough to get themselves killed over it, then an agnecy that is concerned with women should be concerned about this too. I think working with animal agencies is a very apt approach that won't strain the resources of women's shelters in an area they are not familar with. More good news on this front:
Laws shield pets from domestic violence Posted 8/23/2006 11:38 PM By Emily Bazar, USA TODAY: Maine, Vermont and New York have passed laws this year that allow judges to include pets in protective orders. Illinois and New Jersey legislators are considering similar measures, and animal welfare advocates in other states, including California, are urging action.
