A top anti-organized crime and triad officer who was credited with arresting Hong Kong's most notorious robber plunged to his death from a public housing estate in Kwai Chung. What a tragic end to a truly illustrious career. Stephen Fung had joined the HK Police Force at the age of 16 after completing Grade 10, and was made captain by the time he was twenty, he was also briefly co-hosting a radio-show which my mom listens to. Years and years ago, at the height of his career, he was very much the model for other officers and youth, to whom he advices, as someone who have made the decision to join the forces at such a young age instead of pursuing other interests, that the most important thing in life is knowing how to coop with it.
I respect the HK police, a lot, while there are a 'few bad apples', it is true in the case of HK that it is relatively few, since 30 years ago when the anti-corruption board was established. The only popular 'negativity' about the police force that I remember, and still brings itself up in HK soap, is the expression that 'good sons don't join the police force', since with the triads and all, there is a good chance you could died then, leaving your white haired parents to bury their black haired child.
When I was very young it was my dream to become a police officer because they seemed so cool, and everyone looked up to them and felt safe, not nervous, with their regular appearances on the streets during their on-foot-patrols. Unfortunately in grade one though, my eyes were no longer perfect vision, and I remember being told by my parents that this would disqualify me, though I don't know if they change it since then, no matter now since I'm elsewhere.
