SasoDei Rec: Tragic Kingdom by 012607
So I was searching for Deidara fics at FF.Net, he's the new guy, only appeared in the the manga so far, I reason there won't be too much crap yet, and well, I was wrong. Tons of horrors have already spawned bearing his name. Some of them didn't even get his name right, at least I think they were trying for his name, but who else would the perpetrator intend "Diedara" of the Akatsuki to be? In the summary and through out the story...

I read it back on Friday, and I still don't have anything good enough to say, still awed (since FF.Net only lets you review once I'll send one later). I dare say this is the best SasoDei fic I have ever read and my favourite, in terms of characterization, character development, and story telling. This was written after "The End" for SasoDei in the manga, so that could account for how canon it felt, and it does. Oh the fan in me wish that it ended not in tragedy, but it was beautiful, so I would definitely recommend you read it. It starts at the beginning of their partnership and follow through to the end through Sasori's narrative, first person POV. I love Sasori's voice in this, exasperated, long-suffering, age-old, snarky but ultimately serious. I love how the two of them getting closer was shown, it flows, it feels like a natural progression and everything fits.
This is how I see exploration and development of the SasoDei relationship at its best. I love SasoDei fluff too, and I believe that this pairing is capable of fluff (of which there were some in "Tragic Kingdom"), and snark (of which there were plenty), but the darkness of their partnership, their reality, is still there, they are in the Akatsuki after all. Sasori is a very controlling person, while it was Deidara's choice, their relationship is not one of equals in play. With what was shown so far, I believe with who they are, who Sasori is (the variable is Deidara because his story still isn't out yet), and the way it was set up, their relationship will almost inevitably be unhealthy and down right harmful at points...but they still belong with each other in the end because somehow they still make each other better, and who else is there?
