Actually, the birthrate in the US has dropped too (don't know about Canada), mainly because so many women are now in the workforce. They work, so they have less time and inclination to have kids. Lots of women want to have careers and be successful, not stay home and raise kids.

Two words: Day care.

Also, it would help that assholes stop asking working women why they don't stay home with their kids once they find out she has children.

Some people think it'll be best for the kids if the mother stay home. Guess what hon, it'll be best for the husband if the wife lives for him, and it'll be best for the wife if the husband lives for her. It's called a balance of interest. Also, if you have to think about staying home for the children, don't just think about now, think about the future, the future of your female children. If a woman stay home believing it's your duty to, she is indirectly telling her daughters that the daughter must also do the same in the future, and therefore you are influencing them to make a choice that will likely make them unhappy.

Lots of day cares have serious problems, what with being understaffed, badly staffed, or too expensive. Which is why lots of new mothers prefer to stay home with their kids. I think it is good for parents to stay involved in their kids' lives (including dear old dad). So I disagree with daycare and think that at least one parent should be home for the kids, at least while they're still really young.

So the solution is better daycare. Prefereably daycares established next to the children's mother or father's workplace.
