Oh Dear Watson...the discovery of H/W slash

May 13, 2004 00:36

Okay, I didn't actually just recently discover the existence of Holmes/Watson slash, I kinda knew they've been around for a long time, and for a long time I steer clear, because their special friendship is dear to me, especially in light of how the first batch of H/W fics I stumbled across were OOC hells.

Than I found The Rag And Bone Shop via a random link on a thread at fandom_wank, some post about "chan". I went there to see what kind of HP stuff the site have, and promptly came across the Holmes/Watson section.

Curiousity have long had me at her mercy.

It was in character Holmes! Read "Leaving" at the section. I don't agree with it as an explanination of why Holmes finally seeked Moriarty out, but at least she have Holmes mentally noting that sucide is absurd and defeatist. There is also a list of "clichés" within the Holmes/Watson fandom, amusing.

I'm not going to read through Sir Conan Doyle's work looking for subtext, because when I read it I'm often too absorbed to think so things beyond the situation the text presents, but maybe I want to give reading H/W a try. It'll be a separate thing, my enjoyment of cannon and fannon.

ETA (2006): None of the links above work any longer, instead;

Telenu's site - Rag and Bone Shop
* Sherlock Holmes section: Leaving: Rated PG. Holmes and Mary have it out, Victorian style; set shortly before "The Final Problem." Ah, there is a sequel, too bad by now I've decided that H/W slash is not my cup of tea after all. < / use of cliché expression >
