The 3 Day Thanksgiving

Nov 25, 2001 19:36

This has been the most mind-numbing weekend. Thanksgiving is a huge holiday for our family. My dad and Hormoz, his best friend from college - correction brother, my dad's parents adopted his family, basically - have always had our two families together for Thanksgiving, since the beginning of time. (Well more like ever since college for them, so some 25 years?)

Now we don't just have one meal and then be done with the whole thing. It's a 4-5 hour drive between our houses, so we have to make the best out of our time together, what better way to do that than with food. We have 3 huge meals between Thursday and Sunday. The first meal is the grand Turkey dinner, complete with 22 lb turkey, my Dad's stuffing (which was really his dad's stuffing, but I was never given the opportunity for my grandpop to make it for me), mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes with marshmallows (mmm), peas and other vegetables, wine, wine, and more wine, and probably more food that I forgot about, because I'm quite the picky eater. The second meal is seafood night, king crab legs, clams, muscles, crab cakes, shrimp, rice (have to have something to eat all this with), and wine, wine, wine. (noticing a trend?) The third meal is the best, and I don't think I can spell it - so I'm going to spell it how it sounds - "shisk a bob" - [creative spelling would be my kind of class]. This elusive "shisk a bob" would be flaigmonon (again with the creative spelling), grilled mushroom, pepper, tomato, onion, and pita bread. We also eat rice with it and Hormoz's salad. Oh wait and one more thing, WINE!

So now that you all are learned in the meals, let's meet the people.
My dad - (no description needed)
My mom - (no description needed)
Erin - my sis, duh you should all know this by now.
Steve - Erin's boyfriend
Hormoz - my dad's "brother"
Arlene - Hormoz's wife
Jaleh - 18 - Hormoz and Arlene's oldest daughter
Sean - 17 H & A's only son

Grandma - Hormoz's mother
Scruffy - The New Yorker's Dog (sweet as anything)
Chris - my dad's real brother
Lee - his wife (though they are seperated)
Amanda - 15 - my awesome cousin, Chris and Lee's oldest daughter

[also mentioned will be Nathan and Na, my friends]
Got it? There will be a quiz.

Thursday 5:00 PM - The Arrival
Already it was dark outside when 6 members of a clan arrived. Jaleh had arrived the night before, since she was coming from college. Greetings were exchanged, one greeting in particular left me a little curious. Sean. He looked good, and technically there is no blood relation between us, so technically I was allowed to think that. After mingling downstairs for a few moments a few of us retreat upstairs, realizing the turkey was not yet done, and smelling it was not helping our hungry stomachs. Jaleh is on the computer, Bethany is hanging around, Sean had already claimed his bed, and I was tired. I laid down next to him and he took my hand. We flirted. It felt good to do. He kissed me. I went to kiss back, because it felt good. But it was weird. I wasn't supposed to kiss the boy who I'd known since my first Thanksgiving, especially not with people around, his family, my family, our family. Still it is hard to resist a guy, who looks good and knows how to seduce a woman. I must have the will power of a Goddess. There was more, but nothing to a great extent [Erin I know you'll be reading this, please, don't have a heart attack]. Dinner is ready and we eat. We return later, more flirting, then bed.

Friday - A Day of Nothing, a Night of Football
The house awoke late on Friday morning, the turkey must have done us through, with whatever mythological chemical that is in it that makes one tired. Some went shopping, others (or me) read The Great Gatsby. Aunt Steph and Uncle Tom arrived at some point and we chatted, but I didn't have much to say. I talked to Kristen, she couldn't go to the game, but I had convinced Na and she convinced Nathan to go to the football game. I thought Sean was going to come with me, but it turns out he doesn't like football. I know, I was shocked too - a male who DOESN'T LIKE FOOTBALL - apparently Nathan doesn't either, it's a conspiracy. Anyway, instead Bethany, aka my freaking shadow, cause she thinks I'm the coolest thing since sliced bread, came with me. Na had told Nathan that I was bringing a male rellie, so Nathan was really confused when he saw the little shadow with me. We sat on the blanket rather far from the field, because we got there late and it was really crowded. We talked about random things. (Like turkey basters, apparently that kind of talk makes a guy horny, cause Nathan got a little uncomfortable?) When we heard cowbells we'd look at the field, cause that had to mean something good had happened. Good things were happening. Hereford won. They weren't slated to win, but they did. [Next Friday they play for the state title at College Park, I hope they win, I want to go too!] [plus I can visit Erin and all her hot college guy friends while I'm down there, wooyah!] So during the game I invite Na and Nathan over, cause we have lots of food at my house, and I needed some more friend time - I have a friend addiction.

So Na and Nathan get dropped off at my house, I wasn't there yet, Uncle Chris was my ride and Ian and his friends were kicking field goals after the game. We're almost home and Uncle Chris's car breaks down at the top of our driveway, oh what excitement. I run the whole 1/4 mile down, cause it was damn cold and I wanted to see my friends. I get in and give Nathan stuffing, he finds out that he is being picked up soon *pout* oh well. Na stayed the night, that was cool. Sean, Na and I talked for like 2 hours, since we all have a bit in common (like turkey basters...)LOL...so yeah - fairly good day.

Saturday - Another Day of Nothing, a Night full of food and people
Saturday I slept late. Na left at noon. Some people went on a walk. It was gross outside, so I opted out of going. [which was good cause Scruffy pulled my dad over and he busted his elbow open on a rock, not pretty] By 5 PM there were 16 people at my house. That's a lot of people. No privacy. Plus I was being all cold-shoulderish to Sean by then, it was just too weird. So no more events there. I had some wine after dinner, Chelsea told me I was drunk, but I was acting crazy, I don't need to be drunk to do that. Plus a small glass of 6% alcohol was not going to make me drunk, I may be a lightweight, but I'm not a 70 lb toothpick like my shadow, Bethany [goodness, that girl has NO substance on her, I so could fight her, in fact she is scared of me. I don't get to be scary too often...I tried to be all intimidating to Sean, but he is 6'2" and wrestles, I was toast.] People left and then there were 10. I went to bed, nothing was going on, and alcohol, even though not a lot of it, makes me very sleepy.

Sunday - Rainy Goodbyes
Another pattern, we slept in. Well most of us. Hormoz, Arlene, and Dad woke up early to take Jaleh to the bus station. We ate breakfast and then the clan packed up to leave. As they did so I played with Scruffy. He is the sweetest dog, reminds me SO much of Radar, I miss having a dog around, but I don't miss the mess they leave, [my goodness, after they left I was vacuuming and there was SO much dog hair]. We said our goodbyes, I was hug twirled, ha Na! I GOT HUG TWIRLED! I wore my slippers out to say bye, cause I didn't feel like putting my shoes on, I was still wearing yesterday's clothes. It was a bit damp outside and my slippers were soaked, now I'm not wearing my slippers. How sad. I suppose the rainy day fits with their leaving, it's always sad to go from having a full of life house to the plain old boring house, but Erin is still here, she doesn't leave till the butt-crack of dawn tomorrow (she just wants to sleep in her OWN bed more, now that it is all back together.

So that was my weekend, the short version of it, of course, there were many other things that happened, some of which I probably forgot, cause I tend to do that, forget. So I'm off to eat leftovers and do some homework, this should be fun, ugh.

boys, friends, family, weekend
