Australian PM for life (well, it's been 11 years), John Howard, wants to
clamp down on allowing immigrants with HIV or AIDS into Australia.
Call me a heartless bastard, but it's sound policy. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, but no country should be forced to take on the extraordinary healthcare costs of immigrants already afflicted with an illness notorious for its expense to treat. Even without a nationalized healthcare industry, immigrants don't tend to have loads of money so most western governments have social welfare programs to cover the poor within society.
The U.S. has a similar policy, although there are always exceptions to the rule.
