There are lots of stories about the same-sex marriage vote today, and yes, it's a foregone conclusion that the supporters of the Federal Marriage Amendment are far short of what it would take to pass a constitutional amendment. But a quote in
this story caught my attention:
"I don't believe there's any issue that's more important than this one," said Sen. David Vitter, a Louisiana Republican.
Okay, so you're a senator from Louisiana and you can't think of any issue that's more important than this? Not one? Even if you think really hard? Would you like to buy a
vowel?
In happier news, an effort to hold a referendum on a new Washington [state] law banning discrimination against gays in housing, employment, insurance, and credit
failed for a lack of signatures, meaning the law will go into effect, uh, today. Three cheers for apathy among the homophobes in the incessant nagging drizzle state.
On a tangential note, there were some AP photos of anti-gay activists unloading petitions (
here and
here). I couldn't help but notice the cryptic text on their red sweatshirts and wonder what it means. Are there any Washingtonians who can explain the meaning of that? Is it related to gay issues at all?
