They can try to drag the Catholic Church, kicking and screaming, into the 21st Century, (from the 14th) - but I have my doubts about their chances of success.

I was adopted as an infant. My birth parents-who were, and still are, unknown to me or my parents-placed a condition on my adoption that my adoptive parents be Catholic. Mine weren't, but Dad had (well, still has) an unambiguously Irish surname, and went to Catholic school for part of his K-12 education, so no one closely scrutinized his claim.
