While Obama's directive that HHS should put together regulations that prohibit hospitals from prohibiting gay couples to visit one another is great and all,
it only works when the hospital obeys it Long story short: Two gay men, ages 88 and 77, who had been partners for more than 20 years, lived in Sonoma County, California. When the elder of the two fells down the front steps, he was taken to the hospital. Not only did the hospital prohibit his partner from seeing him - despite the fact that they had medical directives and all other paperwork signed, sealed, and delivered - but the hospital sued the county for the right to make all medical decisions and won. The men were sent to two different nursing homes and their house and all belongings were sold at public auction even though the 77-year-old man was capable of taking care of himself. Apparently we're back to the 1920s where if you protest the machine, you must be crazy and/or hysterical. After three months, the elder partner died alone.
Obviously a lawsuit is ongoing.
