Not necessarily. Many of the volunteers I've gathered are aware of Proposition 8, and we refer to it when we promote the event (at least on the event page). You're right in that the '8' part might be lost on some, but more people are aware of Prop 8 in New Jersey than one might think. ^^
Sure, gay people. But Joe Schmo on the street, the heterosexual we're trying to win over? I don't he's going to care or be knowledgeable about California's Prop 8 backlash or see its relevancy to New Jersey.
I think you're assuming that most of the people, from the volunteers to the people attending the photo shoot, are homosexual/bisexual/etc. I mean, if you look at Garden State Equality (a prominent civil rights organization) many members are not homosexuals, and they are aware of not only national gay rights issues, but international as well. As for the relevance, yes, that might be the case, but hey, that's what the photo shoot is for. Get more people aware of not only Prop 8, but of the struggle happening all over the country.
I started organizing this as a means to show support for Californians, but due to the elections in Maine and New Jersey, it's become more than that. I think you are underestimating the heterosexual population of New Jersey. Or maybe I'm being optimistic, either way, I just posted this so that anyone that does support marriage equality can get involved in a fun way, since many people don't necessarily call legislators and what not. :)
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate what you're trying to do. I just think that "No H8" is California-specific and seems random when you're pushing the issue across the country. I, of course, hope it's effective.
Oh, now I understand what you mean with the specific 'NOH8' message. Yes, it is California-specific... I guess we're also hoping that showing support for California can morph into support for equality all over. I'm glad you commented, this issue is something I can elaborate on in my report. ^^
