Department of State wants to extend benefits to same-sex couples

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has sent a draft memo out with the proposed changes. It has to be reviewed, but that seems like a (potentially lengthy) bureaucratic formality.

Basically, it would provide domestic partnership benefits to members of the Foreign Service, who are stationed overseas. Heterosexual partnerships could get benefits, but same-sex couples were left in the cold. Currently, partners of gay FSOs can't apply for early-application jobs at embassies, and are not on their "partners' health insurance, lack access to U.S. medical facilities abroad, and are not eligible for emergency evacuations."

Kudos to Secretary Clinton for taking a step in the right direction.
