GLSEN Ally Pledge Cards...in Kindergarten?

Nov 01, 2008 16:33

First, I don't want anyone to bitch about the goddamn source. I don't care, it doesn't matter, and it's pointless to whine about. I get it, you don't like Fox News. Deal with it. Jesus.

So, a California public school Kindergarten teacher is in hot water after encouraging her students to sign GLSEN Ally Pledge cards. Basically, the cards say you won't sue anti-LGBT language, confront it if you hear it, etc. All pretty good stuff.

But really, can kids who can't even read understand what they're signing, or even have a concept of what it means? I'm all for these ally cards in, say, middle and high school. But Kindergarten? I don't know if it's inappropriate, but it's kind of silly. And is only going to fuel the anti-gay bigots, as an example of us trying to recruit their precious children.

I think you can make it clear to a bunch of five year olds that bullying and harassment is unnacceptable, diversity is a good thing, etc. without having them sign something they don't understand and that is meant for older kids.
