Outlet, by Randy Taguchi. A bad book...? Or... the worst book? Judge for yourself!
p. 155:
"You also told be you knew about outlets."
She slowly swallowed a bite of the hot dog before replying. "Shamans are like the holes in the wall where electricity comes through, if that's what you mean. But instead of conducting electricity, they're connected to the unseen world. When people visit shamans, it's like they're plugging themselves into an outlet. In so doing, they connect to the world of the gods."
"Okay."
"Outlets and plugs are useless without each other. But together they complete a circuit - a circle, if you will."
p. 199:
What was he talking about? Was this a prediction? A warning? "Are you saying my confusion will only get worse?"
He gave a weak shrug of his shoulders. "I don't know. I think it might. I've had several patients like you before. These days a lot of people think everything can be explained by trauma, but that's only if the psyche in question is running the same OS as most people. With a Windows psyche, maybe trauma explains everything, but with a Mac psyche, it doesn't. And recently, more and more people are running on different systems - I'm sure of that. They're extremely sensitive. They've got new ways of processing things. But there's no manual yet for their OS. No applications that'll run on it. So people think they're malfunctioning, or full of bugs. Of course - they're still in development. Who knows, they might be beta versions."
I'd had enough. I interrupted him. "I have no idea what you're talking about."
Yamagishi still looked as if he had something to say, but I sealed his lips with mine. I'd been wanting to do this. It was quicker this way. I understand a man when I'm connected to him that way.
