I have a kind of negative opinion of the Mainichi because it seems like they focus on the zany, weird, sensational, and simply perverted news stories to the point that they exclude 'normal' news. It's not hard to see why that would be - most English speakers reading Japanese news are probably in the market for the strange and unusual. Still, it's not quite everything I'd hope for. And the Yomiuri doesn't seem to be much better. The truth is I haven't found a good, reliable online source of sensible, useful news about Japan in English.
