OSCAR TIME!
OK, yeah, I know like NONE of my friends care, but dammit, I do so I am going to do this post anyway. Here are who I *want* to win, and who I think will win... and ne'er the twain shall meet? Starting from the bottom up... (and omitting a lot of categories that I only give half a shit about this year, or haven't seen ANY of the movies in the category)
Best Visual Effects
Avatar
District 9
Star Trek
And I start with a hard one! OK, so honestly, District 9 was utterly amazing, but I think that Avatar should win simply based on the huge advances in visual effects technology the movie made. And I think it will win.
Best Short Film (animated)
"French Roast"
"Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty"
"The Lady and the Reaper"
"Logorama"
"A Matter of Loaf and Death"
Obviously the latest in the phenomenal Wallace and Gromit series A Matter of Loaf and Death should win. Obviously it will. Or somebody's gonna cut a bitch.
Best Adapted Screenplay
District 9
An Education
In the Loop
Precious
Up in the Air
I really, really, really want District 9 to win this (and I want to read whatever it is based off of), but I am going to bet that either Precious or Up in the Air is going to win it. Bah. Just not enough sci-fi lovers in the Academy.
Best Original Screenplay
The Hurt Locker
Inglourious Basterds
The Messenger
A Serious Man
Up
Ohohoh... hard! I LOVE Up as a movie, but I really think that Tarantino deserves this award (and director, but I'm getting ahead of myself) for Inglourious Basterds. Either that or The Hurt Locker will actually win.
Best Animated Feature Film
Coraline
Fantastic Mr. Fox
The Princess and the Frog
The Secret of Kells
Up
Because Up is never going to win Best Picture, the Academy will give it a nod here. Although I think it would be awesome if the little independent The Secret of Kells, about a young monk working on illuminating the Book of Kells, came from behind and swept the big-budget, big-Hollywood competition.
Best Supporting Actress
Penelope Cruz in Nine
Vera Farmiga in Up in the Air
Maggie Gyllenhaal in Crazy Heart
Anna Kendrick in Up in the Air
Mo-nique in Precious
Do I really care who wins this one? Not really, but Mo'nique is cool.
Best Supporting Actor
Matt Damon in Invictus
Woody Harrelson in The Messenger
Christopher Plummer in The Last Station
Stanley Tucci in The Lovely Bones
Christoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds
Christoph Waltz is the front-runner in this by a looooong shot and I really want him to win it. He was so awesome.
Best Actress
Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side
Helen Mirren in The Last Station
Carey Mulligan in An Education
Gabourey Sidibe in Precious
Meryl Streep in Julie & Julia
I always want Meryl Streep to win. Always. But, sadly, I think Sandra Bullock will. Yuck. However, this is a pretty open category and I could see almost anyone getting the award.
Best Actor
Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart
George Clooney in Up in the Air
Colin Firth in A Single Man
Morgan Freeman in Invictus
Jeremy Renner in The Hurt Locker
If anyone other than Jeff Bridges wins here I will shoot something. And with his Golden Globe win he is the front-runner, but he doesn't have it in a lock.
Best Director
Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker
James Cameron, Avatar
Lee Daniels, Precious
Jason Reitman, Up in the Air
Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds
Oh how I want Quentin Tarantino to win this. But I don't think that he will. It will either go to James Cameron or Kathryn Bigelow.
Best Picture
Avatar
The Blind Side
District 9
An Education
The Hurt Locker
Inglourious Basterds
Precious
A Serious Man
Up
Up in the Air
For the first year there are TEN nominees for Best Picture. I sorta-kinda understand why they did this, but I don't think it much adds to the show. As it is, I think that District 9, Up, and Inglourious Basterds should all get honorable mentions, but this award should go to Avatar. Especially given the overall impact the film has had. Now if I had to go on the merits of story-telling ALONE, I would probably pick District 9 simply because it was so well done. I hope that the same crew does the World War Z movie, because that is exactly how it needs to be done.
And the most important reason to tune in to the Oscars this year?! Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin are hosting! ROFL. I DEMAND A MUSICAL NUMBER! :D
