Well, I'd have to say that the most obvious difference is the use of recently developed technology as a tool to make Carrie's humiliation . . . um, I don't want to say "worse," but maybe more widespread, in that there's a website where anybody with internet access can watch a video of the period/shower scene. That really stands out for me, because I find it so easy to imagine myself in Carrie's place (something similar happened to me when I was in 7th grade, except I was in class and bled through my pants, but I was able to run away . . . I actually ended up hiding in the gym locker room!), and I can't help but think it would be even more devastating to have the video posted online . . . and then to see it again later, at the worst possible moment . . . it make the breakdown even more understandable.
Maybe I should link to this post made by one of the women I follow on tumblr, in which she writes about how the first movie portrayed the other girls at Carrie's school as the really evil ones who were making their boyfriends participate in their bullying of Carrie. That's not a reading that a reasonable viewer could get from the new movie. This time around, the boys are just as bad and need no encouragement. It is a girl who points everyone toward targeting Carrie specifically, but the "queen bee" character's boyfriend is very clearly shown to be a deeply horrible person (and to have multiple "future domestic abuser" red flags), and his posse is at least as bad as hers.
