There’s another round of “female fictional characters and how RL women should feel about them” on the internet, and I feel the need to point out something that I haven’t seen much (or any) mention of: Criticizing how a male author writes a female character is NOT the same as criticizing a real life woman.

I really do need to make that post about femslash I've been meaning to make. You made one of my points with female characters either being horrible caricatures or just being bland to the point of forgetable.

Also, as I said, most of the worst offenders in the field of "bland/forgettable" and nearly all the worst offenders on the "horrible caricatures" front are in fact men. Most of them take much more care with their male characters and/or have some other good point that shines through the mess of their female characterization. I don't think it's fair to women or helpful to feminism to say that a woman who likes some aspects of a man's writing has to support his portrayal of women no matter how crappy it is.
