They did the jobs they didn't have to do.  In Keel's case, for Truth, Justice, Freedom, Reasonably Priced Love, and an Egg*. In memory of the Republic of Treacle Mine Road, which on one long night was the center of order, calm, and incoming food in Anhk-Morpork.
