My brain... (A.k.a., those of you who know me will not be surprised by this...)
So I'm reading a book on Poisons: From Hemlock to Botox and the Killer Bean Calabar, which is relevant mostly in that I have the title here to add to this year's reading list. Anyway. No. The part that will surprise pretty much none of you is my reaction to a quote in it.
Here's the quote: "Le secret des grandes fortunes sans cause apparente est un crime oublié, parce qui'il a été proprement fait." Honore de Balzac, Le Père Goriot, Ch. 2 Book's translation -- "The secret of great fortunes for which you are at a loss to account is a crime that has never been found out, because it was properly executed." [Rhi's note; gotta say, I don't even do French and that looks like a clunky translation to me just from the cognates!]
Is anyone really surprised that my reaction to this came down to, "You know, I need to do a long fic and drop in clues throughout to a number of crimes committed during/right before -- that aren't relevant to the main plot -- and then mention that fact in the end notes with this quote." Damn it. Now I'm going to have to call something "Properly Executed," too.
Anyway. Back to cleaning programs off the netbook and writing the Steve Rogers goes to see Connor MacLeod for Fury fic. Why do I get all the practical characters? Why? ::/rhetorical::
