A Rex Stout Nero Wolfe book that never was -- it was actually an in-house publishing joke, but the artist didn't know they were joking.
Here's the full story and the proposed cover for Stiff Upper Lipstick. For those who don't feel like opening a new tab, here's the summary:
"Archie Goodwin has a field-day -- and Nero finds his misogyny slipping a little -- in trying to award the orchids for murder among the glamorous demonstrators for a cosmetics firm, whose successive sales managers have mysteriously conked out, each with a labial brand mark on his brow.
Nero Wolfe at his mostest -- Rex Stouter than ever was."
(Now I want to read this, damn it!)
Also, a link to
a rough sketch that was rejected for the cover of The Doorbell Rang. I can see why they didn't use it, but I adore Wolfe as Quixote and Archie as Pancho.
