There I was, industriously reading through a book on Greek myth, when I ran into a timeline on key moments in verbal and artistic myth-telling in Greece, with two particularly amusing entries:
? 8th/7th century BCE -- Homer, Illiad, Odyssey, Homeric Hymns attributed to him
. . .
? 3rd centure CE -- Quintus of Smyrna, epic poem filling the 'gap' between Illiad and Odyssey
At which point I went, 'Cool! Early fanfic!' and started giggling. I blame all of you who got me into fandom....
