Last time, it was running into (a) Duncan MacLeod in a Nero Wolfe novella, "Murder Is Corny." This time? I just found out I first met Wolfe and Goodwin fifteen years ago.
I'm rereading Randall Garrett's Lord Darcy books, and I found comments in Lord Darcy Investigates about, "As my cousin de London would say, "Pfui!", and "as my cousin de London would put it, "Most unsatisfactory!" The first made me wonder; the second had me giggling about, 'Oh, Garrett didn't!' In the first chapter of Too Many Magicians there have been references to Lord Bontriomphe, Chief Investigator of London, and the Marquis de London, who "leaves his palace but seldom" and "makes a hobby of cultivating rare and exotic plants".... I suspect that you could (very) loosely translate Bon triomphe as Good win. And the rest sounds very familiar. ::giggling:: This should be fun! I had no idea I'd met them before, though. Whee!
ETA: And Marquis de London has a well-appointed office with a red leather chair, a large globe, and a waterfall painting; Lord Bontriomphe is always well-dressed, with an air of competence. In addition he has an eidetic memory, a flair for narrative, and a willingness to embarrass the Marquis in such narrative. Whee!
