After several months of burn-out, I seem to be getting things done again. Switching the topic of my general paper (a paper I have to write as a milestone requirement for my PhD) to a subfield I am already competent in has helped a lot. Never mind that it was supposed to be defended by June. Nobody seems to mind all that much.
The class I'm teaching this semester is filled with a bunch of little assholes. I guess most of them are fine, but there are some of them... As a group, they are that combination of loud and dumb that makes teaching into a frustrating endeavor. They don't raise their hands to ask questions or to make points. They just blurt out whatever they are thinking. A couple of them are individually loud and dumb. I very nearly had to remind them that they had all been in school for at least 12 years and all should know by this point of their damn adult lives that they how to behave in a classroom setting.
They got better when they realized that Phonology is hard and that they would actually have to pay attention if they wanted to figure out how it works. But, shit, it shouldn't have to come to that.
Autumn is rolling into its second half -- the dreary, cold, depressing half that portends the monotonous gloom of winter. This will be New England Winter® #4 for me. Already, it is colder than average for this time of year. Boundless optimism was never my thing anyway.
