I made some off-hand comment to my class today about the Cold War.
They gave me that blank look that indicated that they didn't understand what the fuck I was talking about. So I asked how many of them were born during the Cold War. One woman raised her hand.
When I said I was too, she said no way, not possible. When I pointed out that it ended in 1991, she said "Oh, I thought it was like in the 80s," but kept her hand in the air. Still, nobody else raised their hands.
One student was proud to be born in the year that Bill Clinton was inaugurated.
This, I should be clear, is a roomful of adults. Twenty-three adults, including me.
Adults.
