The title of the story is
Rare river dolphin 'now extinct'
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/6935343.stm The only thing is in the first paragraph it says what was actually said, which is completely different.
They are likely to be extinct...not they ARE extinct. The story even says how things are defined as extinct and this animal has not been missing long enough to be declared extinct.
Yes people only read the headlines but should someone then find one of these critters alive it merely emphasises the fact that 'Scientists' were wrong, when they aren't.

It is almost as bad as 'Scientists say' being used as the term to say someone who knows something about stuff that we can't be arsed learning and do not trust says.
