Finola just posted her running list on her blog and I thought it was a great idea. So I'm sitting here with my little iPod plugged in and I'm going to share what music motivates me to run through those tough moments (and what makes me slow the heck down when I'm outrunning myself). Please, no judging. Sometimes the beat just works, y'know?

The National Anthem - Radiohead **a good long noisy one to take your mind off how long you've been running**
I'm actually quite surprised how little Radiohead I have on there, but they may not have the beat that I need. Hm. I will have to investigate this further. Also, the complete and utter lack of She Wants Revenge, Interpol... Very odd.
I really enjoy Elliott Brood and was introduced to their music through CBC Radio 3 back in the day - I found both EB and Malajube on someone's public playlist (Malajube is also shockingly is not on my list, which shall have to be rectified). Then, that same year, I was able to go see them (both!) at Bluesfest in Ottawa. That was awesome. And let me buy all of their CDs. Really. I went to the CD tent and bought every album they had (2, each, so 4 CDs). Elliott Brood characterises (or characterised, I'm not sure about recently) their music as Death Country. Malajube mixes English and French poetic lyrics with fun tunes and reminds me a bit of The Weakerthans, only from Montreal. I've enjoyed running to both bands. I blame my recent shift to Apple products on my lack of certain mixes. As I said, I will rectify that.
Now, to explain the dance-run bit. Sometimes when I'm out doing my normal run, if a certain song comes on, I'll start to play a little game with myself. So when a certain part of the beat comes along, I'll make sure my right foot comes down thumpy-like. Or I'll vary where my foot comes down, so that I'm widening my stance a bit, almost "hopping" from side to side. It just mixes it up. The boxing-run bit involves me tucking into more of a boxer stance and engaging my arms and torso in a bit more movement. Not the best thing to do on a long run, but it's a short song and helps me remind myself to keep my shoulders loose.
Anyways, not scientific, but it is also music I like. Sometimes one of the songs will come on and I'll skip it because it's just not in the right place in my run (e.g. too slow when I've got a good pace; too fast when I'm trying to pace myself), but for the most part I'm able to put it on shuffle and have a nice run without too many repeats.
