So as some of you may recall --probably not-- I've been wanting to freeze grill cheese sandwiches to take to BM with me. I did an experiment prior to heading to the Playa, and had some good results. Unfortunately, it didn't quite work out once at the Playa.
Preparation: Toast the bread, then fry one side in butter. Slice the cheddar cheese and place cold between the buttered toast. Vacuum pack. Freeze.
Result straight out the freezer: Amazing! I boiled the sandwich in its vacuumed bag for 5 minutes. The sandwich came out with crispy bread, and melted cheese. Heaven!
Result from the cooler out on the Playa: Not so good. The sandwich had thawed in the cooler, and the moisture ruined the consistency of the bread. It came out chewy and not pleasant. The taste was not horrible, but the experience was definitely not satisfying.
Final conclusion: If you're just looking to make a bunch of grill cheese sandwiches for home ahead of time, yay, it's awesome. But if you're looking to enjoy a grill cheese at Burning Man, save yourself the work and just find Black Rock Diner for an awesome grill cheese sandwich there!
