Angular Rusted Bronze Hatchling very nearly takes a tumble on his quest through the candidates, balancing himself at the last minute with an adjustment of his over-sized wings. The change in posture shifts his attention, too, and instead of seeking out a group of eager weyrbrats to the left of him, he backtracks towards another, his head tilted with great interest as he comes to a halt in front of a tall, brown-haired man. There is no hesitation in his actions, then: he leans forward, his head dipping as if to nod in satisfaction, and Impression is a certainty.
>'> appearance
Rust - red-bronze, coppery - shades this angular dragon, sheeting him with striations of color that range from near-gold to hints of a mineral green. He is small for a bronze, and thin, his shoulders and haunches spare. He moves with wound-up care, precise and quick, aided by somewhat oversized, powerful wings, reddish-gold in hue and shaded in with a pale patina. His talons, washed in mineral green, are long and sharp, the shade matched at his narrow headknobs, where it dapples back to that rusty bronze that sweeps down aristocratically defined neckridges, towards the eventual fork of his lengthy, sweeping tail.
personality
Rhenzeth is a peculiar dragon, at once seeming typical for his color, with that ego and self-possession, and also wholly foreign, a dragon determined to be himself, achieving on his own terms and merits, and not just his rider's. His is a quiet confidence, but with a self-assurance that runs so deep it seems impossible to shake: Rhenzeth believes in H'lam, but even more than that, he believes in himself, his own abilities, his own triumphs-to-come. He is the master of subtle pressure, hinting, suggesting, pushing - but very rarely allowing it to seem like he is attempting to manipulate anyone, least of all his own rider. He'd rather his rider be an equal partner, though, and he consciously pushes him to come out of his shell, to take charge of his life, and to join in his plans. Rhenzeth has ambition, and H'lam is going to have to fall in line to make that happen - that's what it comes down to. And Rhenzeth is not accustomed to losing.
Rhenzeth is a proud dragon, and though he doesn't always show it to others, he is judgmental - a trait he shares with his rider. He has no time for those he considers to be 'slow', or to lack dedication, and hes not afraid to say something about it: << Really, Kenizath, do you think this is a game? >> Though he usually sounds genial, he holds on to these thoughts, managing to remember, if not the specifics, then the fact that he is unimpressed with the dragon in question. He encourages Hlam in this, too, suggesting even without words that it is important to recognize the flaws in others, important to judge them for it - he and Hlam may not be /without/ flaws, and he acknowledges this, but it is right to note these things in others. Despite the pleasant way in which he tries to deal with everyone, from clutchmates to wingmates and beyond, he will often make quiet comments to H'lam, dark and sarcastic, at the expense of those around him.
Even from the first days of their life together, Rhenzeth's self-possession is remarkable. While other dragons may get upset easily, feeding on the emotions of their riders, or feeling abandoned when their riders are not immediately present, Rhenzeth has no such worries. He dislikes being left behind, but this is because he prefers to be in the thick of things, important, and, maybe more important still, in the loop. While strong emotions are not something he generally indulges in, he is eager almost to the point of desperation to grow up, join the wings, be taken seriously. This makes him an impatient student, though he's reluctant to show that impatience as anything but arrogance - << Surely we know this already. /I/ do, anyway. Hurry up. Are you all that slow? >> - except to H'lam, who will be the recipient of many a quiet rant over the course of their training. None of this is to say that Rhenzeth is an excellent student, either: it will take him some time to really get control over his body and wings, and in his impatience, he is prone to making mistakes, though he never lets this interrupt his demeanour of cool confidence.
When finally - finally! - weyrlinghood is over and Rhenzeth has been tapped into a wing, his attentions will turn immediately towards making his mark. His wingleader will get regular suggestions of improvements that could be made, though these are always made on the quiet, and with a modesty that is rarely otherwise seen. << I was just thinking... What if we tried it this way? Do you think that might stop that hole from developing? >> He may drive his wingleader mad with the suggestions, but they are usually not bad ones: his watchful nature ensures that he understands, perhaps better than most, what is needed. Should he make Wingleader - or, better still, Weyrleader - Rhenzeth will turn his attentions to this with the same quiet confidence he always exudes, and this will prove effective; it's hard not to respect that kind of self-possession and complete and utter surety.
As interested in greens as he is golds, Rhenzeth will nonetheless take his time before rising to chase in his first flight - as though he's initially too concerned with observing the process, and developing his own strategy, to actually try it out. When he does chase, it will be with little warning, for he is not the kind to pine over a female; he has little time for romanticism. Nonetheless, he chooses his females carefully, chasing when he chooses to, rather than being caught up in an uncontrollable urge. He is, after all, a restrained dragon - control is everything. Should he catch, he will have little interest in her afterwards, though if she is a gold, and there is a clutch involved, he will do his duty - a restrained, dignified sire.
Rhenzeth's subtle manipulations are, above all, focused upon H'lam. He understands better than anyone the potential his rider has, and he makes it his priority to encourage it into fruition. Not much of a talker himself, he pushes H'lam to share his feelings, his thoughts, reminding him, just quietly, << Thoughts unshared go wasted. >> His independence will leave H'lam plenty of room for himself, however: though Rhenzeth tends to be dominant, and would prefer to take charge of the partnership, he has no need to invade every corner of his rider's world. If anything, Rhenzeth finds the idea of being that close to another, even his own rider, distasteful - his independence, his desire to succeed as himself and not just H'lams lifemate, makes him a curious force, but one content with taking separate paths, so long as the eventual goal is the same.
Rhenzeth's mental touch is characterized by a bitter, metallic taste, and the sound of crumbling metal, sharp and jagged, though his actual voice is a smoother baritone, really very pleasant and robust. He uses images extensively, often to the exclusion of actual words, which he tends to find limiting. Calm, conversational, assuring: Rhenzeth shows very little emotion, mentally, save perhaps to H'lam.
Those wings of Rhenzeth's, oversized in his youth and still large as he gets older, will always be the most itchy part of him, particularly at the join to his body, a place impossible for him to reach or deal with himself. Though relatively calm about his own itching, should it be left for too long, even he will lose his cool - and then, H'lam will feel it as if it were his own, desperate and unpleasant.
