Well let's see, two days, then I leave to go to Connecticut.
Ravenfrog got me a nice little sport wrist watch, which is good, since I usually use my cell phone as a watch but I probably won't be able to have that for at least the first week. And I get the impression that it would probably be hard on my push-ups muscles to be late to things *grin*

I talked to my sponsor in Alameda yesterday. He will be my immediate superior once I get down there. He told me a lot of stuff, about the job, about housing, about different entertainments and things in the area. And a fair amount about himself and his family. He has a wife and two sons. The older son is 22 and in the Air Force stationed in Alaska. The younger son is 18 and lives at home and will be going to Community College.

The job I'll be going to is in the projects department of the ESU (Electronic Support Unit) which means I'll be doing a lot of project management. That's cool because that was exactly what I was hoping to learn more about, and gain experience in. When I first get there He said I will be taking over a lot of the admin stuff that he has to do right now. That will allow me to get my feet wet and get to know everybody. Then he will start training me to take over his job, as he will be moving to a different command towards the end of the year. Then in August another new ensign will be arriving and they will take the admin stuff while I do my sponsor's current job.

For the housing, my sponsor said that his experience with the on base housing people was not very good. He has been in the CG for 20 years, and made it to Chief Petty Officer as enlisted before becoming a commissioned officer. So when he was applying for base housing they were trying to put him in the small housing for junior officers instead of the larger housing that he warranted as a Chief. So he ended up finding a house to rent in San Ramone (I don't know how to spell it)
The BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) takes care of the rent and utilities, so it essentially doesn't cost him anything, but his commute sounds like it is at least over an hour long. He drives from his house for a few miles to a BART station, then rides the BART, then bikes from a station to the CG Island. Good grief.
Apparently the people he knows have commutes anywhere from 3 hours to 15 mins. It appears that what I will be doing is getting in contact with the housing office down there and finding out what housing they would assign me. If it is in Alameda, then we will probably go ahead and do that, since that commute is much closer to the 15 mins. But if they are going to put us in Novato or Concord, then we will probably have my sponsor help us look for other rentals. Since he offered to help with that.

So that's the housing info update.

Has everyone remembered to prepare for Mother's day? I did, I am proud to say. I have a card going in the mail and I got my brother and sister together and ordered flowers to be delivered. Since I am about the worst one to remember this sort of thing I think I deserve a pat on the back.

He sounded like a really nice guy and friendly and very willing to help me get adjusted to the CG as quickly and successfully as possible.
