I’m working. Coffee is brewing and a bright red light is beginning to pour into the store through an unnatural sun, which is rising almost directly in front of the Dunkin Donuts. I’m not in my work uniform, rather, I’m dressed in the purple and black industrial gear associated with my persona, Grinner. My eyes are bleary and every time I turn my head it’s as if I’m being spun around. I’m dizzy and trying to keep my head up and eyes forward, to stop the world from shaking and twisting around me. I close my mouth and hear a terrible grinding noise. Unsure of what it is I chance a look around only to have the world give out around me in an entropic burst. Shelves topple and machines fall and shatter. But no one notices but me, and I force myself to act as if nothing is wrong so that no one thinks me insane. I open my mouth to speak and feel something hard slip over my tongue. I close my mouth to investigate and the grinding sensation begins again.
My teeth shatter.
I feel pain wrack through my body as my mouth fills with the broken pieces of my teeth. Its only the back teeth that broke, my furthest four molars, yet my entire mouth is filled and I collapse, gagging and vomiting on the shattered enamel and bone tumbling from my mouth onto the floor. I look up at my boss who is completely indifferent and ask to take my ten-minute break to fix my mouth He sighs angrily at me and points to the door. I stand and the world upsets again, tossing me to the side. My mouth is filled with broken teeth; my mouth is filled with blood… It’s starting to break past my trembling lips… I can’t let anyone see that I’m in pain… I can’t let them see that the teeth are broken…
I hit the stairs and the world; literally, spins around me like a fun-house tunnel. I hear the grinding again and feel my teeth connect, top to bottom, and completely break under the duress of their contact. My word is blood, shattered bone, and pain.
I wake up.
I sit up straight in bed, terrified and in a cold sweat. Kelly is sleeping beside me, and I want to wake her. I open my mouth to call her name and feel something pass over my tongue. Sharp and small… it cuts me. I close my mouth to keep from crying out in pain…
The grinding noise…
My teeth shatter…
There is pain, shock, and then I awaken.
