YEARRRGGHH!

Every time I think I've calmed down about Eragon, something new pisses me off!! It's bad enough that CP plagiarized large portions of his book, but the way his fans defend it is possibly worse! They seem to think it's "okay to copy if the original author is dead" "it's not copying it's 'homage'" "there are so many books it's impossible to be original" "it's too hard to think up of your own names so it's ok to take someone else's and use it". WHAAATTT???! Where are these kids getting the idea that it's okay to plagiarize? Some choice quotes from the Inheritance Forums:

"Just to clarify a major point:
Christopher does not STEAL the names. Christopher puts names from famous literature in his books to pay homage to those books, because they've been a major influence in his writing thus far in his life. Christopher has said this numerous times in interviews. He is most definitely not stealing. This thread seems to have the complete wrong idea, and I wanted to set that straight."

From Mike, owner of Shurtugal. Uhhh... okay as long as we don't call it "stealing" it's all ok!

"oh well he has written it already, i am sure the author of 'beowulf wont mind( as he is dead)"

"WEll he can't make every signle thing up himself, he had to get ideas from somewhere."

"Considering the fact that movie titles are running out, people have resorted to making remakes of older movies. And since there are a lot more books than movies, this is not surprising."

If there were nothing left to write, let's stop writing. Hollywood remakes old movies because it doesn't like to gamble on new ideas that might not sell well.

*sighs* Wow. I don't see why this is so important. Why? Like it was said before, you can't expect CP to come up with everything himself. I'm a writer, and I know how hard it is."

Good to know there are more plagiarists in the writing community!

"LoL it does reall ymatter then if hes dead but prolly would be better if he made it himself oh well"

Oh, yeah, sure. Lol it prlly wuld B bttr if he didn't steal but tolKinz ded so lol o well whatevs nvrmnd.

"I have to agree with Seth, and all those who say CP can not come up with his own names. You other guys must be jealous that he did not use yours."

Taking the "ur just jelus" argument and running with it. These people should become lawyers! "Maybe the defendant did break in and steal the money... or maybe you're just jealous you didn't steal it yourself!"

"The rites to the name are gone so he can use it as much as he wants"

Let's completely disregard the "creative" part of the "creative process" and be reminded by the lengthy legal notices on Anne McCaffrey's website that she WILL sue your guts out if you touch her Pern dragons (unless, of course, she's owned by the same publisher as you).

"they dont belong to ne 1 there are no laws or rights so get over it"

Uhhmm. Oh, dear lord.

And one ray of hope:

"It may not be a crime, but it's disrespectful and kinda lame. They didn't have copyright laws back then anyways. So if having the name Hrothgar is not bad, let's name a character Beowulf, or Don Quixote. It is bad to copy. It doesn't matter if it's not a law. USE THE HONOR SYSTEM!"
