Question re Scotland, Ireland, and England

Mar 10, 2006 17:52

I've asked my most trusted sources of information and nobody seems to know the answers to these questions that may seem peculiar here in the States.

As I understand it, Scotland, Ireland, and England together are known as "Great Britain" or "the United Kingdom." First question: is there a difference between "Great Britain" and "the United Kingdom" and if so, what is it?

Next: As I understand it, the country is Great Britain (or the United Kingdom). If that is the case, then what are Scotland, Ireland, and England? They are not states or counties or burroughs. Nor are they territories. So what are they called? This is the question that has really been plaguing me!

Someone please provide an answer, because my Tookish curiosity won't rest until I have an answer!
