"Chilling and riveting"? Oh, good! Because that's how it was for Sam, Merry, and Pippin as well. They really needed to see that chain again, and Frodo's letter, in order to gain the closure they needed.
Aggh! "Oh, Mr. Frodo, that's hard! That's hard...!"
What a very sad and effective chapter. I love the use of Aragorn's remark to Pippin about casting off treasures at need: a very profound closing of the circle, there. But such a sad duty.
Using Aragorn's remark to Pippin was entirely Barbara's idea and execution, and I think she did it brilliantly! It is a sad duty that the three of them have, but as always, they are glad to be able to help Frodo in any way they can.
I have always been struck by how Aragorn's off-hand remark to Pippin--many leagues away from where Frodo and Sam were struggling along--seemed somehow prophetic! So it seemed to me that the chain could literally represent those fetters that had bound Frodo.
And yes, I thought it should come full circle, and have the chain destroyed in the very hearth where the Ring's true nature was revealed.
