Nerds v. Geeks

When I first became pregnant, I went on Mumsnet. I found it informative, and I still check back from time to time. However, I could never really connect with the other mums and mums to be on it. I puzzled over the reasons for this, and then I realised that the problem was that none of them would have any idea what a d20 was.

When I told raygungothic about this, he agreed that it was a problem and pointed out that I could not be the only mum to be in this predicament. We came up with the idea of a website similar to Mumsnet, but possibly called something like Nerdmums for those of us who might like to discuss how pregnancy affects gaming (I fell asleep during a combat scene on an airship) or other questions relating to various nerd culture things. For example, I am currently watching Star Trek: The Next Generation for the first time and of course I swoon over Picard, but why do I also find Data attractive now and am I the only one?

I'd done some searches on the web to see if there was anything like our Nerdmums idea out there and come up with nothing. raygungothic then said "Try searching for geek mums," which I did. There was one small site. When I asked him why he'd suggested searching for geek as opposed to nerds, he said that he thought "nerd" has more negative connotations to lots of people than does "geek". I found this interesting, because I have always felt that "geek" is far more negative than "nerd". I'm not entirely sure why, though. Therefore, I present the question to the LJ floor, which term do you prefer and why?
