Evening musings

I went out this evening around 8ish to see if by chance I could find a small daypack or something to use for, well, wandering around in the day when I came across a couple of British guys singing one of the most beautiful renditions of Halleluiah I have ever heard.  I don’t know if it was his voice, or just that I’m a little homesick and hearing someone singing a song I know and understand, but either way I had to stop and listen.

I got lost in the Red Light district on my way back.  I found the city center just fine, but then I decided to do a bit of a scenic walk through the surrounding area and when I tried to find my way back I got lost.  Honestly, I would have loved to take a few pictures except that I can’t think of many things that would be ruder, but compared with some of the areas in downtown Vancouver where the prostitutes sell themselves on street corners, it was clean.  Both the streets and the women were clean and the women were lacking the hollow eyed look that most of our prostitutes back home seem to have, not to mention the lack of track marks or burns from crack pipes.  If the prostitution is going to happen anyways, why not keep it contained and regulated?

Tomorrow I’m going to rent a bike and try to get to some of the less touristy areas.  Well, get outside of the city center and red light district anyways.  My little travel book says that the Jordan area is known for its cheap eateries, so I’m going to go biking down there and try and pick up a sandwich or something.  I keep coming across all these places I want to go in and buy stuff from, but I know I’d end up spending all three months’ worth of my cash in a month or less if I indulged myself every time I saw something like a chocolate or cheese shop.

I’m still feeling a little homesick, although it’s better than it was yesterday.  I thought I was tougher than this.  I know it’ll get better, but this is my first time really on my own like this, and I’m feeling a little overwhelmed.

On a side note, the water here sucks for my skin, and I forgot my razor and a decent bar of soap.  At least there's plenty of hot water though.
