So I went and saw Spider-Man 2 and it was not very good. I liked a couple of the action scenes (especially the first fight between Peter and Electro) and Peter and Gwen were very cute together. I guess if you like Andrew and/or Emma (a shoutout goes also to Sally Field ofc) it is worth a watch but otherwise it’s a hot mess.
///I tried to avoid spoilers. The only big one I refer to is what happens to Gwen///
They tried to touch on A LOT of issues in this and hence everything other than Peter’s and Gwen’s relationship (stuff like Peter’s and Harry’s friendship, the stuff about Peter’s parents) just fell flat. The pacing was very poor and the movie just felt so goddamn long whereas it was in reality the length of your average superhero film.
Also this movie has some tropes that really need to be retired. By now you all probably know what happens to Gwen. Yup. You know it’s gonna be there but still it’s excruciating to watch. And it’s really sad how much better developed her character was in this movie than in the first. She got a lot of cool stuff to do, her plans and choices and life outside of dating Peter were given more importance and she was also a hero in her own right.
But Peter’s gotta have his manpain, right?
Also the annoying and for whatever fucking reason quite common trope of the “loser fanboy” of a superhero becoming a villain is here and Jamie Foxx deserved so much better, okay?
And of course when it comes to diversity this movie does a shit job but you probably already know that.
At least I went and saw it with my friend and the best part was that he ships Peter/Gwen more than I do (I ship it too but not as much) and it was cute how he got emotional over everything (then at the end it wasn’t cute anymore ofc because we were just both pissed off, he knew what was gonna happen too, but he had hope against hope). Also he’s nerdy enough to appreciate my comic book knowledge and compliment me on me having a GL bag, so that’s a win.
There's
a very well-written review up on comics alliance btw so you can check that out.
