Meh.
That's what I describe this movie as. I gotta say, I had practically NO expectations for this movie. I thought it was going to be crap for 3 reasons.
1: The lack of Sean Connery.
2: The inclusion of Shia LaBeouf (more on that later)
3: The reinclusion of Marion
I went into that theatre with my drink and popcorn and sat down. To my surprise the place was practically empty. I wondered why. Then the movie opened up and I sat down wondering what I was doing in the theatre.
If ANYTHING has changed in Indiana Jones, it's the dialogue. I'm sorry, but the ENTIRE beginning sequence seemed rushed. It didn't help that the dialogue was Star Wars terrible. Like, Lucas shit all over Indiana Jones again. But alas, once the first fist was delivered, I became sedated. I LOVED the little Ark easter egg at the beginning. It was pretty clever, I must say. The first punch instantly turned Indiana Jones into something nostalgic. It's nice that so little has changed in the fight department. If Lucasfilms knows how to make anything, it's a fight scene.
Harrison Ford was back and playing himself, which is to say he played Dr. Jones quite well in this adventure. Amusing as always, he grunted his way through the roles. Age has done NOTHING to him.
Shia LaBeouf. I have to say, I don't like this guy. I mean, I haven't seen any instance where he can act...ever. But hey, he did a pretty damn well job here. He played it straight, but like Harrison Ford did in Raiders. He was the big surprise of this movie.
Now, I was enjoying the movie...UNTIL the car chase. Now, I loved the car chase, but the movie went to hell as soon as that car chase ended. There were NO temple traps, nor were there any Natives to battle (OMG! SKULL. RUNS). Also, the ending was really anti-climatic. I mean, Aliens? COME ON. Also, Spalko's death was pretty weak sauce. OMG! FLAMING EYEZ! Indiana Jones always has a gross-death scene and it didn't deliver.
That moves me onto my next point: Spalko. The Russians seem to have 1 pose: Be angry and point guns. Now, they never fire them, but they always look angry. The Russians never seemed to be an apparent threat to Indy. Their 'evilness' was only asserted by the fact they were Russian, an obvious no-no. Previous Indiana Jones villians have been able to distinguish themselves, but Spalko fails in that light.
Marion. Marion, Marion, Marion, Marion. You were my second favourite character in Raiders. What the hell happened? It was like Lucas/Spielberg added you for fan service. The attempted romance was bad, bad, bad. It had no motivation and there was no sexual tension. Beside all of that, she seemed like a waste.
If I have to rate this, I'd give it a 7/10
If I have to Rate both halves of the Movie
Part 1 gets an 8.5
Part 2 gets a 6.8
