I really liked Portland. Kim and I were really close to moving up, but we ultimately decided to stay, for a few reasons. For me, I wasn't looking forward to starting over in a new music scene, with virtually no contacts or 'street cred.' In SJ I'm finally getting a decent gig here and there. I also wasn't looking forward to living so far from Tom & Karin, and Marie's family, not to mention the other friends around here. For both of us, we decided it was important to have family close by because eventually, we want to have children. Neither of our families are perfect, but having a good support group is really important - not to mention that family is important in its own right. My parents are going to be galavanting everywhere in their RV, so we can't plan on living near them (even if they're planting roots in Southern Oregon). But I'm sure we can count on them to make a trip down when we need their help.

A big thing keeping us here is that we both have jobs. Big ol' question marks in that category if we moved up to Portland.

Having said all that, I'm really disappointed that I won't be living near Kim's bro, Ryan, Matt, Katie and Zoe. They were excellent host/hostesses, and we would have been lost and in the dark without them. Also, I really loved that the landscape was green (Plants GROW up there!), and I really think that Portland would be a good fit socially, at least while we're young. I still think I'd be happy living in either city. It just seems that San Jose works better for now because of the difficulty in finding new jobs, and adjusting to a different city.

Hey, this weekend, on Sunday Aug. 9th, at 4PM the San Jose Jazz Orchestra is playing with Don Menza (amazing saxophonist) at the San Jose Jazz Festival in Downtown (you guessed it) San Jose. BONUS: We're playing a new tune I wrote! Come listen!
